You could be forgiven for assuming that certain on-it corners of the music media have fallen for Leamington Spa based duo Coves more because of the reputation of their manager, James Endeacott of The Libertines fame, than because of their music. But you’d almost certainly be wrong. Coves make a calculated, psychadelica-infused racket is absolutely rammed with ruthless quality.
Their recent EP ‘Cast A Shadow’ is definitely something special, perhaps due to its consistency, its dark tones, or its head arresting melodies. Perhaps all three, but probably something else; there’s just so much going on. Take ‘No Ladder’, for example, which mixes savage guitars, sweet vocals, and walloping drums, or the brutal honesty of ‘Fall Out Of Love’. The EP is tied together by a satisfying otherworldliness, though, that is reminiscent of psych-folk sensations Stealing Sheep. I’m not saying that those shadowy machinations of the music industry don’t exist, but in this case, it’s definitely the music that’s doing all the talking.
