The first teaser trailer for the next episode in the blockbuster Star Wars franchise has been released online.

The teaser clip, which originally went up on iTunes trailers but was soon mirrored to YouTube, gives fans their first glimpse at the vision of the sci-fi series from Lost co-creator JJ Abrams.

The trailer gives away very few details about what to expect from the movie, but there has been a lot of internet chatter about about John Boyega’s stormtrooper outfit, and about whether he will be playing a stormtrooper or another character dressed up as a stormtrooper.

Daisy Ridley also appears in the clip riding a hover bike, while Oscar Isaac turns up as an X-Wing pilot, leading an attack run across the surface of a mist-covered lake.

Not shown in the video were Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie and Domhnall Gleeson as well as original Star Wars trilogy stars Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill, who have confirmed that they joined the cast.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens will be in theatres in December 2015.
